Less than three years after the tragic death of former Australian Test batsman Phillip Hughes during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the news is sure to result in a revisiting of the safety rules in the sport.
The fatal injury suffered by Zubair came within hours of Australian test star David Warner being hit in the head by a Josh Hazlewood bouncer during a practice match in Darwin.
In his four matches for the Quetta Bears, Ahmed scored an unbeaten 111 in a Twenty20 match in 2014.
It is not immediately known whether Ahmed was wearing a helmet.
