Under 20’s Asian 7’s series will be kicked off in Malaysia on 15th & 16th August and Hong Kong on 22nd 23rd of August 2015 and the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) have decided to send an U20 side to compete.

In order to select a national squad (SLRFU) has organised an under 20’s sevens tournament for schools, clubs or any franchise with an open invitation for anyone to submit a team under 20 years of age. This tournament will take place on the 25th & 26th of July 2015. Players born between 01.01.1995 – 31.12.1997 are eligible to play, however, players who are born in 1998/1999 have to follow the World Rugby guidelines formerly (IRB).

This allows some of the school players who played last year in the under 19 Singer league to participate.  Players such as Shenal Deelaka the captain of triple champions team Isipathana in 2014 who is now playing for Havelocks SC, Sudam Parinda (Isipathana / Police SC), Science College duo Prasad Malinda & Maduranga (Air Force), Sithum Peiris (Wesley / CR&FC), Prince Chamara (Science / Army SC), Asela Wijesinghe (Kingswood / Army SC) can be named eligible.

This is an exciting prospect for schoolboys who will be allowed a showcase to display their talents and is a glorious opportunity to some who missed out last year as Sri Lanka did not participate in the U20 Asian 7s series last year.  It will also give them an opportunity to once again play alongside their last year’s team mates. Science College, Isipathana College, Agoal International, Havelocks SC are the current teams who will be competing in this tournament and there is speculation of more teams to enroll.

This is also a good initiation by the SLRFU as rugby 7s now being an Olympic sport.
