Thirty two teams from the North, East, West and South will unite for one cause of peace and harmony as the Murali Harmony Cup 2014 kicks off today in five different towns such as Jaffna, Oddusuddan, Mankulam and Kilinochchi in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka with 11 games are scheduled to take place in the first day and a total of 40 matches will be conducted during the whole course of the tournament.
Many budding cricketers have not played a coloured-clothing match with white balls and the Murali Harmony Cup is the once in a life-time opportunity for those youngsters in North and East.
Eight under 23 girls’ teams have been drawn in 2 groups and after the round-robin stage; the top 2 teams will advance for the final on 2nd of November. Out of all the 8 teams, only one team is from the commercial capital of Colombo while all the other teams have lined up from different parts of the island.
The two previous boys’ tournaments were both won by St Peter’s College, Colombo who will once again start as one of the tournament favorites having been invited to defend their crown. However, this year they will face stiff competition from the dominant under 19 all-island champions Richmond College from Galle, Ananda College from Colombo, Prince of Wales College from Moratuwa and a traditionally strong Jaffna Combined Schools.
The participating teams have been increased to 24 from 16 and this will be one of the most spectacular platforms for any young cricketer to compete with players from North, East combined together for a winning cause.
During the past tournaments, many upsets have been occurred such as combined teams in North have defeated much fancied teams from the West and South to showcase the true competiveness of the event.
Five days of carnival atmosphere will no doubt add value to the peace and reconciliation happening in once the most troubled areas in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.
