The bulldozing skipper from Isipathana College Omalka Gunarathne will lead the Colombo combined schools team and Isuru Rangala from Trinity College will take reigns as captain for the Kandy side in the upcoming Colombo combined schools vs Kandy combined schools game that will be played this Friday.
The Colombo Combined Schools vs Kandy Combined Schools encounter this time around will be held in two legs; one in Colombo and the other in Kandy. Organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association, the first leg will kick off at the Havelocks Sports Club grounds at 4.30 p.m. on the 23rd of October 2015.
Known for his aggressive traits and his bulldozing sprints, Omalka Gunarathne will be taking reigns as captain for the Colombo combined side. Representing the Green Machines Isipathana College, Omalka played an integral role in the jubilant team who emerged triple champions in the year 2014. Later on captaining the side in the year 2014, Omalka took his Isipathana outfit to be runners up in the League, Sevens and in the President’s cup. Carving out an image as a destructive #8, Omalka donned the Sri Lankan under 20 jersey last year in the under 20 Junior Asiad that was held in Colombo.
He got the opportunity of wearing the national colors once again this year in the shorter format of the sport in the Under 20 Asia Sevens championships that was held in Hong Kong and Malaysia. Currently signed up for Navy Sports Club, Omalka played for the sailors in the Inter Club Sevens Championships that was worked out at Racecourse complex this September. With all the expertise he has within himself, Omalka will lead the Colombo team at the Havelock’s side on Friday.
The Trinity College skipper and utility player Isuru Rangala has been picked to lead the Kandy combined schools side. Isuru played an integral role in the Trinity College 1st XV team for the past five years playing in positions varying from lock to #8. Rangala was also the lock forward in last year’s Sri Lankan under-20-team at the Junior Asiad. Captaining the Lions outfit in 2015, his team ended up in the third spot in the overall league table. Isuru will be taking over duties from his predecessor Tarinda Ratwatte who captained the team last year and it will be tough task for the 19 year old when he faces the experience filled Colombo side.
