St. Joseph’s College old boys beat the star studded St. Peter’s College old boys team in the final to remain unbeaten and win the inaugural rugby 7’s in the 47th Saints Quadrangular tournament hosted by the Old Peterites, held at the St. Peter’s College grounds yesterday.
For the first time in 47 years the Saints Quadrangular tournament (Old Joes, Old Peterites, Old Anthonians and Old Benedictines) included rugby in this year’s tournament.
The star studded Peterites team took on the Benedictines team in the opening game on a rainy morning in Bambalapitiya. The Peterites looked favourites from the start and they steamrolled over a hapless Benedictines team which never looked in the game. Next the Joes took on the Old Anthonians in the second game of the day. The Old Joes looked off the pace but soon managed to get back on track and easily scored 7 tries as they demolished the boys from Kandy.
Game three in the day saw the Old Peterites take on the Old Anthonians. Yet again the Old Peterites looked ominous from the start as they ran the Old Anthonians rugged and demolished the Old Anthonians with ease and with that win the Old Peterites booked their place in the cup final.
In the next game, Joes team took on a rather weal Bens team and from the start they got their act together as they minimised errors and added a rather clinical finishing touch to the opportunities they got as they again
scored 7 tries setting up fitting final against arch rivals St. Peter’s. The Plate final was contested between the Old Anthonians and the Old Benedictines. Old Benedictines came in to this game following their losses
to the Old Joes and Old Peterites. Old Anthonians too came in to the Plate final with two losses but the boys from Kandy managed to take some silverware back as they notched up a hard fought win against the Old
Benedictines.
The Cup final was a nail biting match as Old Joes took on the star studded Old Peterites. Clear favourites to win were the Old Peterites but they started off on a bad note as the Old Joes team scored two quick tries in the first half to end the half leading Old Peterites 12-00. The Petes came into the second half determined and started off on a high as they scored two quick tries and gained the lead 14-12. The Joes who were upto the challenge managed a scintillating last minute try to win the game and secure the inaugural rugby 7’s trophy in the Saints Quadrangular tournament 2014.
Old Joes 19 beat Old Peterites 14.
