St. Benedict’s College, the oldest Catholic School in the Archdiocese of Colombo, celebrates its sesquicentennial (1865 – 2015) this year. The La Sallian Brothers who have been running this Institution for almost the entirety of its existence have made it one of the Country’s leading boys schools.
The celebrations are held under the common theme, “Celebrating 150 years of human and Christian Education – Faith! Justice! Joy!”
The Old Benedictines Sports Club and St. Benedict’s College Cricket Wing have come forward to jointly organize Sri Lanka’s first ever invitational Inter schools Under 19 “Double Wicket” tournament as their contribution towards the festivities of their “Alma – Mater”
The organizing Committee is headed by Project Chairman, Basil Perera, a past college cricket captain and a notable sports personality and he is ably assisted by the OBSC President , Malsiri Perera and the College Cricket Wing Chairman, Lalith Madappuli, under the guidance of the Director of the School, Rev. Bro. Janaka Fonseka FSC and the Sports Co-ordinator, Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaz FSC.

The tournament is set to take place during the last week-end of April, 25th & 26th at St. Benedict’s College Grounds, Kotahena.
Saturday, 25th April, proceedings will commence at 8.00 am with a colorful opening ceremony, patronized by Provincial Visitor, Rev. Bro. Denzil Perera FSC, Rev. Bro. Director, St. Benedict’s College, Janaka Fonseka FSC, Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaz, FSC, St. Benedict’s College Sports Co-ordinator & Project Chairman, Basil Perera. The tournament will get off to a start at 9.00 am.
The tournament will be continued on Sunday, 26th April, at 9.30 am, concluding with the presentation of awards participated by distinguished Old Bens, Felix Dias (Chief Guest), Selva Perumal, Joe Savarimuthapulle, Anuruddha Withanachchi, Nimal Gunatunga & Mervyn Fernando.
The Official Draw was held after the launch. The matches billed for Saturday.

The concept of the tournament :
Each team will field two players each for a match; will be conducted on a Knock-out format, consisting 15 matches during the course of 02 days;
There will be 09 neutral players to do the fielding, for each match from a pool of 15 players, being picked by the Organizing Committee, namely from Lumbini Maha Vidyalaya, Moratu Maha Vidyalaya & Thurstan College.
The duration for a match will consist of 04 overs; 02 overs each bowled by one side (02 players), while the other side (02 players) will bat all the overs; there will be a penalty of 05 runs against the batting side, each time a batsman gets out.

Main Awards (02)
Winners – 150th Anniversary Celebrations Trophy 2015 (keep sake), along with a Cash award of Rs. 50,000/- and Gold Medallions and Certificates.
Runners-up – 150th Anniversary Celebrations Trophy 2015 (keep sake), along with a Cash award of Rs. 25,000/- and Gold Medallions and Certificates.
Special Awards (03) :
Best Batsman – Trophy, Medallion, Certificate & a Cash Award of Rs 15,000/-
Best Bowler – Trophy, Medallion, Certificate & a Cash award of Rs. 15,000/-
Best Fielder – Trophy, Medallion, Certificate & a Cash Award of Rs. 15,000/-
All 15 neutral Fielders will receive a gift voucher of Rs. 5,000/- each.
The other 14 teams will receive Certificate of Participation.
The special awards will be adjudicated by Old Ben, Joe Savarimuthapulle.
This was revealed to the General Media at the launch held on Friday, 17th April 2015, 6.30 pm at the Old Bens Sports Club, Kotahena.
