Noah Lyles win 100m Gold with the barest of margins

Noah Lyles has solidified his name as one of the ‘all-time track greats’ with his win in the 100m event, the final race of night, beating out Kishane Thompson, who held the world lead.

As it was a battle for gold between the two rival countries, The United States of America and Jamaica, where the face-off between Noah Lyles and Kishane Thompson respectively would take place, this was a greatly anticipated global event. Thompson was favoured to win, on lane 4, while Lyles was on lane 6.

After the race, Thompson had almost begun to celebrate his victory, certain he’d won. However, the two athletes and the massive audience in the State de France held their breaths, as they had both run a timing of 9.79, which was a personal best for Lyles but not for Thompson (Thompson PB, 9.77, Olympic record was 9.63).

This is the first time that there has been a tie in timings for the men’s 100m since the 1980s. After a review, it was seen that the timings between the two men were separated by five-thousands of a second, allowing Lyles the title of the “world’s fastest man”. He also got his moment of redemption as he finished 7th out of the 8 finalists who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Even though Thompson’s foot had crossed the line first, it was Lyles’ head over the line that saved him. He will be competing in the 200m too, on Tuesday (5th of August), with the chance to win another Olympic medal.

This race delivered in excitement and exhilaration with the most unpredictable end, and Lyles is now the world and US champion. Thompson wins the silver medal, and they have delivered with a race that will go down in history, with barely a separation between them, two incredibly fast athletes who are the best of our time, to win gold and silver.
