The 99th Junior National tournament which commenced on the 8th of August has been the talk of the town as far as sports is concerned with the best youngsters flocking in to produce what has undoubtedly been Tennis of the highest quality.

As the first half of the opening week draws to a close there has been plenty of action that has been witnessed, many a player rising to the occasion to produce his/her best tennis in order to make a name for oneself in the sporting arena.

 

Round up of key Results

Boys and Girls under 18 singles

The boy’s finalists have been decided following the semi- finals that were conducted last evening. The top seed Nishangan Nadarajah was leading 4-1 against Anish Wijesinghe who pulled out of the match as a result of an injury resulting in the favorite booking his place in the finals. The Thomian captain Avishka Perera was able to defeat Chehan Fernando in the second semi -final in order to reach the final stage. Avishka having lost the first set fought back with grit and determination to record a well- earned win with a score line of 3-6 6-4 6-3. The final is scheduled to take place today and will be a match that is most likely to go down to the wire as it will be a case of the consistency of Nadarjah being matched up against the power of Perera.

The girl’s finalists were also found in the likes of Medhira Samarasinghe and Nethmi Waduge. Samarasinghe who defeated the third seed Thewuni Devarajah continued her fine form in the semi- finals as she created yet another upset by defeating the top seed Thisuri Moliigoda in two sets that were decided by tie breaks. The final score was 7-6(2) 7-6(3). The bottom half of the draw was dominated by Nethmi Waduge who cruised into the finals by defeating Hasindhi Lokuge 6-1 6-2. The final which is guaranteed to produce some nail biting tennis is scheduled to take place this evening on court 5 at the SLTA.

The quarter finals are scheduled to take place today and the following players are set to feature in some potentially enthralling encounters.

Quaterfinal 1- Pravin Steele (1) vs Anarga Peiris (8)

Quarterfinal 2- Savit Weerasinghe vs Aravinthan Rajendran

Quarterfinal 3- Andrew Muttiah vs Ravindu Weerasinghe (4)

Quarterfinal 4- Inthujan Selverathnarajah vs Joshua Jayarathne
