Stylish left-handed batsman Nipun Sumanasinghe from St. Joseph’s College became the first schoolboy cricketer in the current 2016/17 season to achieve the 1000-run milestone when he slammed a century against St. Benedict’s College at Darley Road on Saturday.

The number 3 batsman smashed a superb ton of 114 runs from 141 balls with 16 boundaries, which is also his third century of the season. Sumanasinghe started the game on 957 runs and he got to his milestone with a crisp back-foot drive through the covers which reached the boundary in no time.
At the end of the 9th Josephian-Benedictine encounter, Sumanasinghe has accumulated 1071 runs in 25 innings (18 matches) and with two not-outs, he averages 46.56. Prior to this innings, Sumanasinghe smashed 122 against St. Joseph’s Vaz College and 158 against Trinity College.

He has five half-centuries to his name against St. Patrick’s College Jaffna, Mahinda College, Galle, Bandaranayake College Gampaha, Wesley College and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
Sumanasinghe became the first Josephian to reach 1000 runs in a season after former Captain Shameera Weerasinghe achieved the feat during the 2008/09 season.

Interestingly Sumanasinghe has picked up over 30 wickets with his off-spin and will be the main man to watch out in the upcoming 83rd Battle of the Saints encounter against St. Peter’s College on 3rd and 4th March, 2017 at P. Sara Oval.
