Angelo Mathews saves the day for Sri Lanka

2873

Sri Lanka just witnessed glimpses of a fallen warrior as Angelo Mathews resurrected the Lankan innings from 104 for 9 to 210 for 9 with an unbeaten 128 on day one in their warm up game against New Zealand XI at Napier.

Reminiscing Sri Lanka’s first overseas win in New Zealand

The national cricket team is currently in New Zealand on a four week…

After winning the toss, skipper Chandimal decided to bat first. Apart from Mathews it was only the skipper who hung in and scored 28 in the Sri Lanakan innings which was declared at tea on day one. In response at stumps, the New Zealand XI were 67 for 4 in their first innings.

It wasn’t the ideal start for the visitors. The top order couldn’t even last 25 overs which was disappointing. Gunathilake was the first to fall for a 4 ball duck. He was shortly followed by Thirimanne, who is making a comeback to the test side.

Kusal Mendis who came in at 4 found a faint nick down the leg side in the 2nd ball he faced. Skipper Chandimal looked good while he was there. He hung around for more than an hour but failed to capitalize his start.

Dhananjaya De Silva came in at 6. As always he looked promising in his short stay in the crease but threw away his wicket trying to loft one over the mid on fielder against the turn. The very next ball, Dickwella edged one straight to first slip as he continued his horrible form in whites.

The tail didn’t last long apart from Lahiru Kumara. He gave good support to Mathews who looked to be batting in a different level compared to the rest of the batters. He built up his innings wonderfully. His half century came in 96 balls but after seeing all the wickets falling at the other end, he decided to up the ante. He reached his century in just 150 balls but most importantly his innings showed glimpses of how he used to score a lot of runs with the tail in his early days.

With the ball in hand, the Sri Lankan seamers did a good job. Lahiru Kumara whose known for his inconsistency, looked the most disciplined out of the lot which is a good sign for the upcoming Test series.

Apart from Kasun Rajitha, the three other seamers Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara and Suranga Lakmal shared one wicket each. The spin duo of Dilruwan and Sandaken also bowled pretty well. Dilruwan Perera managed to sneak one through the bat and pad of the right handed Philps to claim his first wicket while Sandaken kept it tight on the other end.
