Nishan Peiris, on debut, took six wickets in the second innings as Sri Lanka completed a series clean sweep over New Zealand for the first time in 15 years, registering their biggest win against them by an innings and 154 runs on Sunday.
>>New Zealand fight hard after spin woes from Jayasuriya, Peiris<<
New Zealand resumed their second innings at 199/5 after bad light forced an early stoppage yesterday. Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips fought hard, putting together an impressive partnership, with the keeper-batter reaching his fifty this morning.
The sixth-wicket stand, which took the game deep, was broken after just 3.3 overs of play when Blundell, on 57, was trapped LBW attempting a reverse sweep off Nishan Peiris. New Zealand had added only 17 runs to their overnight total before losing their first wicket of the day.
Phillips went on to register a quick fifty, forming another fighting partnership with Mitchell Santner. The overnight batter looked comfortable against spin, confidently rotating the strike and clearing the fence with ease on multiple occasions.
The 64-run stand came to an end when Phillips, attempting another big hit, holed out to long-on. He had thrown it away and made the long walk back to the dressing room for a well-played 99-ball 78, which included six fours and three sixes. Peiris, meanwhile, became the seventh Sri Lankan to claim a five-wicket haul on debut.

The Black Caps skipper attempted to counter the spinners right away, hitting two boundaries, but couldn’t stick around for long, getting bowled by Prabath Jayasuriya and leaving New Zealand at 291 for 8.
The visitors continued to frustrate the home side as Santner and Ajaz Patel put together another half-century stand, managing to drag the game into the post-lunch session despite a few missed chances by the Sri Lankan fielders.
Santner became the fourth half-centurion of the New Zealand innings before Jayasuriya bowled Patel for 22. Peiris wrapped up the innings by claiming his sixth wicket as New Zealand were bowled out for 360, with Santner stumped by Mendis.
