The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will organize a 15-A-side Rugby Tournament commencing from today which will go on for 4 weeks. Five of the Seven ‘A’ Division clubs in the Province will take part in this inaugural tournament.
WPRFU is the largest provincial Rugby Union is Sri Lanka, with a good record of organizing numerous events hoping to uplift the sport. The current Board of the WPRFU, is headed by Nazeem Mohomed and comprises of a few eminent personalities like Hafeel Marso, Rizly Iliyas, Wimal Senanayake, Fazal Mohomed, Asanga Seneviratne, Dr. Maiya Gunasekara and Nimal Luke, who have worked towards the betterment of Rugby in the country.
The main objective of this tournament is to draw and give opportunities for the up and coming prospective rugby players who finished their school career to continue rugby. This will also act as a great preseason prep tournament for the Clubs, ahead of the Dialog Rugby league.
Since Air Force SC is scheduled to play Doha RFC in Doha today, and CH & FC stated their unavailability, both teams have opted to not take part in this tournament. The rest of the clubs have agreed to play the games in their home grounds whilst also providing all the necessary facilities for the organizers. The Referees union has also agreed to provide their services free of charge, which is a highly commendable gesture.
“WPRFU is committed to increase the number of clubs in the province and will invite upcoming clubs such as Malay SC and Petersons next year. We are also in discussion with Sri Lanka Rugby to have a structured B division tournament. Women’s rugby is one of the focus areas and an administrative structure has now being put in place and discussions with sponsors are underway. The goal is to put in place a women’s club tournament next year”. said Nazeem Mohamed President WPRFU.
Each team is set to play 4 games – the team with most points in the final week will be declared the winners of the tournament.
