The 47th T.B Jayah memorial boxing championship which was held at the Jayathilake Stadium, Nawalapitiya ended with Deerananda MV Pilimatalawa emerging champions, surprising many.
Deeranada MV, which took to the sport only a mere three years ago, won 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and a bronze medal to clinch the overall championship while Vidyaratna College Horana and Kadugannawa National School emerged as the 1st & 2nd runners up respectively. Traditional boxing powerhouse St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy shared honours with Royal College Colombo as 4th place winners.
The tournament was keenly contested with over 220 boxers from 51 schools taking part this year and the task of picking a standout boxer from these talented young pugilists was turning out to be a torrid task until the final of 44-46Kg event for 15-16 age group commenced in the ring. Mohamed Azeen from Royal College managed to win a thrilling fight, earning him the Best Boxer title while his opponent in the fight K.ME.L.N Bandara of the Champion Deerananda MV was adjudged the Best Loser for his tremendous effort.
