The Western Province rugby 7s tournament was held today (20th August) at Police Park. Old Mudalians were Shield champions while Old Kannangara won the Bowl championship. Navy B and Navy A were Plate and Cup champions respectively.
The tournament got under way with 20 teams participating under three categories.
The Development club league consisted of Gampaha RFC, Panadura SC, St. Sebastians SC and Kaluthara RFC.
Segment 1 league contained Air Force A, CH & FC, Army A, Navy B, Navy A, Air Force B, Navy Development and Police B.
Segment 2 league involved Peterson SC, St. Johns Green, Cambrians, Black Hawks, Old Mudalians, Field Force, Old Kannangara, and Old Bens.
Gampaha RFC won the Development segment final beating St. Sebastian’s 19-nil.
In the segment 1 group Navy A defeated Air Force A in the first semi final 17-12 while Havelocks beat Army A 26-7 to set up a meeting with Navy A in the cup final.
CH & FC beat Air Force B in the first plate semifinal 17-7 as Navy B beat fellow Navy Development side 7-0 to progress to the Plate final.
Segment 2 saw Old Mudalians absolutely thrashing St. John’s Green 33-0 to claim an easy win and with it the shield championship. While Old Kannangara beat Black Hawks in the bowl final. The match went into a kick at goal shoot out after been tied in regulation time. Two tries from Godfrey White helped Black Hawks come from behind to drag the game into the shoot out. The Black Hawks failed with their solitary kick as the Old Mudalians converted to win the game and with it the Bowl championship.
The plate final saw Navy B take on CH & FC. Navy B ran away with the game scoring 29 points and conceding just a solitary consolation try for CH & FC. Scores stood at 29-5 at the final whistle.
Cup Final
Navy A, a star studded outfit took on a rather young Havelocks team in the cup final of the Western Province rugby 7s.
Navy A kicked off the game and scored off the very first move as they applied an intense amount of pressure on the young Havelocks side.
Navy A scored a total of three unconverted tries before Romesh Fernando scored the only try for Havelocks, in the first half, as the half drew to a close with Navy A holding the upper hand with a score of 15-5.
Havelocks scored the first try in the second half but further tries by Nivanka Prasad and Lee Keegal put the game to bed for Navy A as they managed an easy win over Havelocks to be crowned as the Cup champions.
