Natwest T20 Blast – Sanga’s and Mahela’ s Teams lost

Sri Lankan Super stars Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena are currently playing  the Natwest T20 championship in England. Kumar, playing for the London bound county Surrey in the south group  and Mahela, playing for Sussex in the north group.

Both  the former Sri Lankan T20 internationals had a positive influence on the game . Mahela scored 39 from 30 and Sanga scored a quick fire 37 from 17 balls .

Surrey played  their first T20 of the season against Glamorgan at the KIA Oval yesterday. Batting first Glamorgan scored a mammoth  240 . South Africans Colin Ingram and Jack Rudolph scored 91 from 47 , 62 from 39 balls respectively. Surrey chasing 241 runs to  win at an asking rate of 12.1  is never an easy task under the lights. Surrey lost their opener Jason Joy in the 1st over and legendary Kumar Sangakkara took over the crease.  Kumar scored 37 from 17 balls with a massive six and 6 boundaries . He looked very good before skying a full ball  to  short fine leg from Meschede . Zafar Ansari  scored 67 from  32 balls  and Steven Davies scored 58 from 32 Balls. Surrey managed to score 215 in 19.3 overs losing the match by 25 runs. 450 runs were scored in this match and most ever for a T20 in England and fourth highest in all T20 cricket.

Mahela’s team Sussex  Sharks played against Kent in Canterbury. Kent won the toss and chose to bat. Batting first Kent scored 185 Runs in their 20 overs. Wicket keeper Samuel Billings 46 and  captain Sam Northeast 40 were the highest scorers for Kent. Sharks chasing down 186 with an asking rate of 9.3, an over seemed very comfortable. Sharks Luke Wright and  Cris Nash posted an 81 in 7.4 overs. Captain Luke wright  got out for 36 from 16 balls. Sri Lankan batting sensation Mahela Jayawardena scored 39 from  30 balls with one huge six over mid- wicket and 4 boundaries. Mahela shared a 31 runs partnership with Nash and a 38 runs partnership with Craig Cachopa. Mahela got out when the score was 150. Sussex Sharks needing 32 runs from 18 balls and the run chase never looked easy. Sharks completed their 20 overs for 178/6 giving Kent a seven run victory in their first Natwest T20 match.

Surrey will be playing the second match today ( 16th May) against Essex at Chelmsford and Sussex will be playing their second match tomorrow ( 17th May ) against Gloucestershire at Hove
