Katana United and Nattandiya United will meet in the Men’s Open final while Vijayaba SC and Chilaw United will play the Men’s U22 final at the 2017 Dialog President’s Gold Cup.

The President’s Gold Cup is hosted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, and was worked off island wide, over a period of four months, attracting teams from over 300 Grama Seva divisions with the participation of over 2500 teams and consisting 40,000 players, in the largest sports tournament in the island.

Open Men’s

Defending champions Katana United defeated last year’s finalists Rantharu SC, Debegama and Nattandiya United beat Balares SC, Boralesgamuwa in the semi-finals.

In the final group stage matches, Katana United beat Nattandiya United and since Balares SC came from a set down to defeat Rantharu SC 18-25, 25-18 & 25-18 in theirs, Nattandiya United met Balares SC and Katana United faced Rantharu SC in the semi-final.

Last year Katana United won the final comfortably 25-20, 25-22 & 25-18 but this year’s semi-final went the distance. Rantharu won the 1st set 22-25 but after another two thrilling sets Katana took a 2-1 lead 25-23, 25-20. In the crucial 4th set both sides traded point for point but it was Rantharu who forced a 5th set with a 25-27 win. However, the experience of Katana Utd showed in the decider as they raced to a 15-9 win.

Nattandiya United defeated Balares SC in straight sets in the other semi-final. Nattandiya won the 1st set 25-18 and after winning a tight 2nd set 25-22 took an important 2-0 lead. In the 3rd set Balares SC lost steam losing 25-15.

Balares SC won 3rd place after Rantharu SC gave a walk-over in the play-off.

U22 Men’s

Last year’s finalists Rajasinghe SC, Ruwanwella and Davisamara SC, Seeduwa both were knocked out in the semi-finals by Vijayaba SC, Hungama and Chilaw United respectively.

The U22 finals of the Dialog President’s Gold Cup Volleyball..

Vijayaba SC defeated Rajasinghe SC in 4 sets. Vijayaba SC won the 1st two sets 25-23 & 25-21. Rajasinghe SC came back to win the 3rd 19-25 but Vijayaba reversed the score-line 25-19 to win the 4th set and the match.

Chilaw United made a remarkable recovery as they came from 2 sets down to win 3-2 against last year’s champions Davisamara SC.

Davisamara SC won the 1st & 2nd sets 23-25 & 21-25 and were heading to a 3-0 win before an injury to one of their key players turned the game around. Chilaw United won the 3rd set 25-21 and the 4th set 25-19 to send the game to a deciding 5th set. Chilaw United continued their momentum to win the 5th set 15-11.

Davisamara SC won 3rd place after Rajasinghe SC gave a walk-over in the play-off.
