National Tusker and Kandy SC winger Richard ‘RICHA’ Dharmapala has been appointed the captain of Kandy Sports Club for the new season of 2017/2018.

Richard is no stranger to leadership roles, having held the vice-captaincy position for the Junior Tuskers in 2012 and captained Kandy in Sevens earlier in the year. He was also vice-captain of the Kandy team throughout the last season, however was appointed temporary captain after an injury sustained by their regular captain Gayan Weerarathne. Expressing his thoughts, he stated that he was honored to be given the title of Kandy skipper. Most are confident that the speedster and playmaker will not be burdened by this extra responsibility.

Despite being one of the long serving players in the current squad since moving to the club in 2013, the appointment will see Richard become one of the establishments youngest captains. With nearly a 100% success rate in appearances to his name, being among the top try scorers in the previous seasons, Dharmapala has firmly entrenched himself as a regular member in the team.

Now in his 5th season of club Rugby, Richard’s first test the inter club seven’s tournament kicked off on the 2nd of June with the star-studded Kandy outfit emerging clear winners in the first leg although they opted out of the second leg of the championship.

Sri Lanka and Kandy Sports Club legend Fazil Marija will take charge as the assistant coach for Kandy Sports Club together with the newly appointed captain Richard Dharmapala ahead of the club season that will kick off at the end of the year.
