National Tusker and Kandy SC winger Richard Dharmapala has been named as the sevens captain of Kandy Sports Club.
This will be Richard’s first ever major stint as skipper having only held the vice-captaincy position for the Junior Tuskers back in 2012. He was also vice-captain of the Kandy team throughout last season but was appointed temporary captain regular captain Gayan Weerarathne sustained an injury. Expressing his thoughts on this, he stated that he was honored to be given the new responsibility of leading Kandy.
Despite being one of the long serving players in the current squad since moving to the club in 2013, the appointment will see Richard become one of its youngest captains. With nearly a 100% success rate in appearances to his name, being among the top try scorers in the previous seasons, Dharmapala has firmly entrenched himself as a regular member of the team.

Now in his 5th season of club Rugby, Richard’s first test will be the sevens tournament which will kick off on the 2nd of June. Kandy SC decided to skip the tournament last season due to most of their players being committed to Kandy’s pre-season practice games, hosting a variety of the middle eastern teams.
Sri Lanka and Kandy Sports Club legend Fazil Marija will take charge of the sevens coaching duties for Kandy Sports Club together with the newly appointed captain Richard Dharmapala ahead of the Inter Club Sevens that will kick off next month.
