Team Dambulla continued their domination in the National Super League 50-Over Tournament 2023, registering their 7th win of the tournament.
Team Dambulla beat Team Jaffna by 34 runs (DLS) in the 19th match of the NSL 50-Over Tournament played today at P. Sara Oval Grounds.
Dambulla Skipper Minod Bhanuka won the toss and invited the opposition to take first lease of the wicket. The Jaffna batters had a terrible time in the middle as they lost 7 wickets for just 89 runs inside the first 20 overs.
However, all-rounder Ravindu Fernando, batting at No. 8, managed to rescue the Jaffna innings, scoring a brilliant century. Fernando hit 100 runs off 89 balls with 11 fours and 5 sixes as Team Jaffna posted 233 runs on the board.
>>Sandakan, Dinusha help Team Dambulla continue their dream run
Seamers Lahiru Samarakoon and Asitha Fernando starred with the ball for Team Dambulla picking up 3 wickets each.
In reply, Team Dambulla got off to a shaky start losing 3 top-order wickets for 89 runs, but opening batter Pavan Rathnayake anchored the innings with a superb century. When Dambulla were 186/4, the rain stopped play at P. Sara Stadium.
The persistent rain washed out the rest of the game, thus resulting in the organizers awarding the victory to Dambulla as they were ahead as per the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) calculations.
Team Kandy registered a 48-run win (DLS) over Team Colombo in the 20th match of the NSL 50-Over Tournament played today at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
>>Ton-up Dinesh Chandimal steers Team Galle to win
Colombo Skipper Nipun Dhananjaya won the toss and chose to bat first, but they were unable to get a good start as their top order faltered against the Kandy bowling lineup.
When Team Colombo were reeling at 98/4, Skipper Dhananjaya and Ashen Bandara gave much-needed impetus to the innings, adding a 114-run stand for the 4th wicket. Bandara, who top-scored for Team Colombo, unfortunately, missed out on a well-deserved century, being dismissed for 99 runs.
Dhananjaya also made a vital 78-ball 62, helping Team Colombo post a competitive total on the board. Seamer Nipun Ransika, who ripped through the Colombo top order, was the pick of the bowlers for Team Kandy with figures of 3/32.
In reply, Team Kandy put on a much better batting display, posting 244/4 in 40.3 overs before rain halted the play at R. Premadasa Stadium. Play did not resume again due to the persistent rain, thus resulting in Team Kandy being declared winners according to the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method.
Skipper Niroshan Dickwella’s match-winning century was the highlight in Kandy’s terrific run-chase. He stroked 103 runs off 81 balls with 12 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 127.16.
As the first round matches of the NSL 50-over tournament concludes with these two games, Team Dambulla, who topped the points table with 7 wins in 8 games will meet the second-placed Team Jaffna (4 wins in 8 games) in the final of the tournament which will take place on the 6th April at R. Premadasa Stadium.
