Former Thomian and Havelocks Sports Club player Sudarshana Muthuthanthri will take over reigns as the skipper for the Tuskers after Fazil Marija in the shorter version of the game.
Muthuthanthri who is 24, has been a regular in the Sri Lanka Rugby contingent in both sevens and XV’s since 2012 and he had the first chances of leading the national side when the Sri Lankans toured China for the first leg of the Asia Sevens Series where the Tuskers ended up overall 4th . From playing flanker in the XV’s format of the national brigade, Muthuthanthri worked his way through to the sevens version to become a force-forward for the Tuskers.
Muthuthanthri famous for his thundering hand-offs in his school days, played for S Thomas in the 2009 -2010 seasons and went on to play for Havelocks Sports Club where he became vice captain in 2012 under Henry Terrance when Havelocks won the Dialog League. The forceful flanker then took over captaincy of the club in 2013 where the Havelocks ended up runners-up.
Playing at hook in sevens in the national side, he is well known for his bulldozing runs and is one of the main ball carriers for the Sri Lankan Tuskers. Taking on duties as the skipper of the national side at the young age of 24, he would be entrusted in taking Sri Lanka within close proximity to Olympic qualification when they tour Hong Kong Sevens in a fortnight.
“We were able to perform well in the concluded Asia Sevens and we were very close to beating Japan. I think we can put what we learnt in the series for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens and try our luck at Rio 2016.” is a statement from the new skipper.
