With the South Asian Athletics Federation (SAFF) Junior Championship 2024 kicking off on the 11th of September, our young Sri Lankan athletes have been unleashing their potential and bringing pride to the country throughout the grounds of Chennai.
One such talent is the Sri Lankan Team Captain Meron Wijesinghe, who secured gold in the junior men’s 100m with a new meet record of 10.41 seconds. This is also a new Sri Lanka Junior Record, and Meron achieved this feat right after the World Athletics Junior Championships, held in Lima, where he was able to make it to the finals but not secure a top spot.
- Meron stands out on an international stage!
- 12 Sri Lankan Athletes for World Athletics U20 Championships
- Malith and Indusara qualify for the Semifinals
Along with Meron’s achievement, the silver medal was also won by Dineth Weeraratna, who ran an impressive timing of 10.49 seconds. (The previous meet record being 10.61 seconds)
Meron’s brilliant performance has shown us why he was deserving of his position as team captain with his performance at the SAFF, and we must all continue to support these young athletes on their journey as they continue to reach new heights on an international stage.
On Day 1, Sri Lanka bagged a total of 9 medals including three gold medals. Apart of Meron, Savindu Awishka and Tharushi Abhisheka won Gold Medals in their respective Junior Men’s 800M finals and Junior Women’s 800M finals.
