A Mayor’s XI which was formed days before humiliated Java Lane 4-1 in the first quarter final of the Mayor’s Cup, which is held to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Colombo Municipal Council.

Mayor’s XI got in front courtesy of an own goal before Shafraz Kaiz equalized for Java Lane. Punsara Thiruna got the first of his brace as Mayor’s XI went into half time with a goal advantage. The second half started off again with an own goal from Mohamed Aleem and Thiruna completed the rout with a late goal.

Mayor's cup Qtr finalMayor’s XI which is coached by Rohana Wickramarathne and Sumith Walpola consisted of players mostly from Army and SLTB SC, and surprisingly Anuruddha Warakagoda, Nadeeka Pushpakumara and Thiruna started after playing in the finale of the Dialog Champions League the day before.


Rewin Kumar turned the ball into his own goal early on after a mix-up with his goalkeeper Dammika Senarath, where he headed it over the keeper and trying to clear the ball only succeeded in poking it in.

However Java Lane got on level terms when Afam Akram looped the over the defense for Kaiz whose shot was initially blocked by Sudesh Suranga but the rebound fell into the path of Kaiz who made no mistake the second time around.

Mayor's cup Qtr finalThiruna gave the lead back before half time as Java Lane looked to be more and more susceptible in defense.

At the start of the second half it was more misery for Java Lane when an effort on target was saved by Senarath but the rebound hit the on rushing Aleem who had no control as it hit his leg and crashed into the net from close range.

Java Lane were all over the park as an organized and disciplined Mayor’s XI finished off after putting pressure on the defense, dispossessing as Ishun Achooty squared off Nishantha Jayaweera who in turn assisted Thiruna who had no trouble in turning the ball in.
