The new selection committee led by Aravinda De Silva has made a bold move by appointing Angelo Mathews as the captain of the Sri Lanka T20 team for the ICC World T20 2016 which starts today with the start of the qualifying games in India.
Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara and the newly-appointed Selection Committee announced the team at Sports Ministry Auditorium on Tuesday morning, hours before the team leaves to India.
All-rounder Angelo Mathews, who leads Sri Lanka in ODIs and Tests, will now be the team’s captain in all three formats.
Why did Sri Lanka finish 4th in Asia?
Lasith Malinga, due to his knee injury has requested to step down from the captaincy after Sri Lanka ended disappointingly as the fourth-placed team in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2016.
Dinesh Chandimal has been named as the vice-captain of the new team. Left-hander, Lahiru Thirimanne and fast bowler Suranga Lakmal has been drafted into the final squad in place of Niroshan Dickwella and Jeffrey Vandersay respectively.
