Representing the South in the Dialog Champions League is one of the newcomers to the football fraternity in Sri Lanka – Matara City Club. Unlike many other illustrious clubs in the island, Matara City Club was only formed in the year 2009 under the Presidency of Hon. Sanath Jayasuriya (M.P)

Even though they are young with history, Matara City Club’s rise to the top tier has been rampant. In less than four years, from bottom tier divison 3 they have qualified themselves to play in the Premier League with the more glamorous teams such as Saunders, Ratnam and Java Lane.
2010 – Champion team at the Division – 3 levels conducted by FFSL
2011 – Runners up team in Division – 2 level, conducted by FFSL
2012 – Qualified to play in the Division – 1 level, conducted by FFSL
2013 – Qualified to play in the premier league, conducted by the FFSL
Also an immense support has been given to the club under the guidance of Deshamanya Dr. Najeeb Deen in the capacity of CEO of the club ever since the inception. Deen Brothers Imports (Pvt) Ltd. are the club’s main sponsor. Matara Uyanwatta Stadium (German – Sri Lanka Football stadium) is the club’s home ground.
Matara C.C was formed with the intention of nurturing football in the area. In the days gone by there had been many talented players born from these parts of the country, but with only the Western Province based clubs and no stage to showcase what they possessed their talents were hidden with them – until now. The school football is very strong in Matara with the likes of S. Servatius, Rahula and Matara S.Thomas’ winning many tournaments.
