Maroons outsmart NF3

Maroons chess club defeated NF3 chess club 4.5-1.5 in the sixth round of the ongoing Super League interclub chess championship which continued at the National Institute of Sports Science in Colombo yesterday.

 

Shanaka Munasinghe (first board), Thimiri Uyanhewage (third board), Chirashana Lamahewa (fifth board) and Lahiru Munasinghe (sixth board) secured full points for the Maroons, while Indian IM, Akshat Khamparia, settled for a draw with former national champion Chinthaka Anurudda on fourth board. The only full point for NF3 was scored by Bhagya Viman on second board when he beat Mojitha Gunaratne.

Maroons showed great determination to hold the reigning champions Fischer chess club to a 3-3 draw earlier in the fifth round.

The battle between Maroons and Fischer saw two International Masters clashing on second board when Romesh Weerawardene of Fischer CC faced Maroons’ Akshat Khamparia. The Indian who was favourite to win the particular match, in fact lived up to expectations, beating Weerawardene and maintaining his 100% winning record in the tournament.

Navy chess club meanwhile registered a comfortable win over TCA chess club when they beat the latter 4.5-1.5 in the sixth round with Yogesh Gautam (first board), Chandana Wijekoon (second board), Fide Master (FM) Sajith Peiris (fourth board) and national champion Isuru Alahakoon (sixth board) sealing full points. TCA could only manage 1.5 points against the sailors as PS Padmasiri drew with Lasitha Subash, while TN Alahakoon defeated Osheen de Silva.
