It was a majestic send off for the legend after he played his final game at Nittawela in the Dialog Rugby League

The 33-year-old announced his retirement from all forms of rugby following last year’s Dialog Rugby League where his club, Kandy Sports Club emerged unbeaten champions.

A household name in Sri Lanka Rugby, Marija excelled in the sport from his schoolboy days at Kingswood College and went on to represent Kandy Sports Club and later Sri Lanka, turning out to be one of the most prolific fly-halves that the country has ever witnessed.

A regular contributor in the national sevens grid, Marija took on the reigns of captain in 2012 and has played a vital role in the team’s development since then. Under his captaincy Sri Lanka were placed fourth in 2014 at the Asia 7s series.

Marija also gave captaincy to the 2015 Sri Lanka XVs outfit that won the Asia Rugby Division I Championship in Philippines.

“After 25 years of playing for Kandy, I am excited to announce my appointment as the 7’s coach of the Kandy Sports Club” added Marija on twitter about the new appointment.

Marija is no stranger to Kandy Sports Club having spent his entire playing career, spanning more than a decade, there and is someone who knows the players well. This time around, Kandy Sports Club will field a young side at the sevens tournament as they look to win back the title that they last won in 2016 (they did not participate in last season’s tournament).
