Five matches in the Singer Schools’ U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa

St. Peter’s College and St. Sebastian’s College, two of the strongest outfits in schools’ cricket met each other today in a traditional fixture which commenced at the St. Sebastian’s College grounds in Moratuwa. The Sebs won the toss and decided to let the opposition take first lease of the wicket. The visitors struggled against some top quality bowling of the hosts and were bowled out for just 98 runs.

In reply, the Sebs managed to take a first innings lead over the visitors but were bowled out for just 122 runs. St. Peter’s began their second innings trailing by 24 runs and were struggling on 51 for 5 wickets at stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs Royal College, Colombo

A traditional fixture between St. Joseph’s College and Royal College commenced today at the SSC grounds. The Royal skipper won the toss and invited the lads from Darley Road to take first lease of the wicket. The decision paid off as the Joes were bundled out for a modest total of 178 runs in their first innings.

Left arm spinner Manula Perera was brilliant with the ball for Royal as he picked up 6 wickets for 26 runs. In reply, Royal College was 93 runs for 3 wickets as umpires called stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

The Group A fixture between Zahira College and De Mazenod College commenced today at the De Mazenod College grounds. After winning the toss, the hosts’ skipper put Zahira into bat first and the visitors went on to post 202 runs in their first innings.

In reply, De Mazenod College was 16 for 1 at stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

Thomas’ scored 259 runs for 8 wickets at stumps on day one. Right handed batsman, Manthila Wijerathne remained unbeaten on 60 runs while left handed batsman, Shalin de Mel chipped in with a half-ton for the Thomians.

St. Anthony’s College dominated the first day in the traditional fixture against rivals Dharmaraja College which commenced today at the St. Anthony’s College grounds. The visiting skipper won the toss and elected to bat first but struggled against the Antonian bowlers as they were bundled out for 118 runs.

Navodya Wijekumara was the pick of the bowlers for St. Anthony’s as he grabbed 6 wickets for 43 runs. The hosts’ batsmen made a strong reply with the bat as they finished day one on 230 for 4. Left handed stroke maker Theeksha Gunasinghe remained unbeaten on 101 runs while Navodya Wijekumara contributed with a valuable 72 runs.
