Manthila and Pavith guide S. Thomas’ to an innings victory

Six matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 was conducted today around the island.

S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia vs Lumbini College, Colombo

S. Thomas’ College recorded an innings victory over Lumbini College in their Group D fixture which concluded today at the S. Thomas’ College Grounds in Mount Lavinia. After been 126 runs for 3 wickets overnight, S. Thomas’ College declared their innings today at 280 runs for 5 wickets.

Right handed batsmen Manthila Wijerathne’s stroke play was the highlight of the innings as he scored an unbeaten 105 runs to put S. Thomas’s on top. Lumbini coming to their second innings, had a challenging task at hand trailing by 101 runs, but failed to stay in the game as they were dismissed for just 99 runs. Thomian Left arm spinner Pavith Rathnayake was instrumental in causing the collapse taking 4 wickets for 23 runs.

Wesley College, Colombo vs Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

Wesley College had to be content with first innings points as their Group C fixture against Joseph Vaz College played at Campbell Park, Borella ended in a draw. Joseph Vaz College resumed day two, on 34/2 and were bowled out for 183 runs in their first innings. Wesley began their second innings with a 90 run lead and managed to score 72 runs for 8 wickets before declaring, setting a target of 163 runs for the opposing team to chase.

Sashan Deneth and Nipun Dananjaya picked up 4 wickets each for the lads from Wennappuwa. Joseph Vaz College got off to a flying start in their run chase but was contained to a draw as they were only able to score 76 runs for 3 wickets at stumps on day two. Nipun Dananjaya made a quick half ton for Joseph Vaz College.

Trinity College, Kandy vs Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda

The Group ‘A’ fixture between Trinity College and Dharmasoka College resumed at the Asgiriya Stadium with Dharmasoka declaring at 150/9 adding no runs to their overnight score. Trinity began their second innings with a lead of 31 runs and declared at 222/5 by setting a target of 254 runs.

Pubudu Bandara made 96 runs and Hasitha Boyagoda chipped in with 47 runs for the Trinitians.

Dharamasoka chasing 254 were only be able to make 172/ 6 at stumps. Dinuka Dilshan (71) and Chamindu Dilshan (38) chased with determination, although the frequent fall of wickets held back the run rate for Dharmasoka.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs Ananda College, Colombo

Miranga Wickramage’s 7 wicket haul for 28 runs was the highlight of the Group D fixture between Ananda College and St. Joseph’s College which commenced today at St. Joseph’s College Grounds. The visiting skipper decided to bat first after winning the toss but the team crumbled for just 144 runs. In reply, Josephs managed to get a first innings lead as they finished day one on 181 runs for 7 wickets. Left handed stroke maker Revan Kelly top scored with 75 runs while Jehan Daniel contributed with 45 runs.

Dharmaraja College, Kandy vs St. Servatius College, Matara

Group C fixture between Dharmaraja College and St. Servatius College commenced today at Uyanwaththa Grounds. Dharmaraja skipper Bawantha Udangamuwa won the toss and decided to bat first but his decision backfired as they were bundled out for 119 runs. In reply, the lads from Matara posted 119 runs for 4 wickets when umpires called for stumps on day one.

Off spinner Mahesh Theekshana and Right arm fast medium bowler Imesh Fernando picked up 5 wickets each for Benedicts. However, St. Benedict’s College batsmen struggled in their first innings as they finished day one on 95 runs for 7 wickets.
