First Sri Lankan track and field athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games, Manjula Kumara earned qualification to the final in the Men’s High jump qualification round which was held short while ago today (9th) in Gold Coast.
The most experienced campaigner in the track and field contingent, Kumara was cleared a a height of 2.21m to qualify as the equal 5th on the qualification round ‘A’ alongside Indian Tejaswin Shankar who also cleared the same mark in the competition.Englishmen Chris Baker and Canadian Django Lovett who competed in the Group B were the best performers managin to clear the mark with the least number of jumps. 11 athletes earned qualification to the final from the two groups.
Veteran High iumper Kumara will be in action in the Men’s high jump final which will be held on the 11th at 1530hrs Sri Lankan time and will be looking to better his longstanding national record of 2.27m which will earn him a spot in the podium.
