Manchester United defy all odds to reach UCL Quarter Finals

Manchester United sealed their place in the last eight of the competition thanks to a defiant comeback in the second leg. They had to overturn a two goal deficit from their first leg away loss at Olympiakos and did so in clinical fashion. Robin Van Persie was the hero of the night as he scored all three goals to send United through on a 3-2 aggregate score. 

Borussia Dortmund reached the next round despite losing their second leg at home to Zenit St Petersburg. Dortmund won the away leg 4-2 but lost the reverse fixture 2-1 and managed to progress 5-4 on aggregate. Sebastian Kehl cancelled out Hulk’s opener but Jose Rondon won it for the Russian outfit.

Chelsea progressed to the next round at the expense of Galatasaray with an aggregate score of 3-1. They drew the away leg 1-1 and won their home leg 2-0 thanks to goals from Samuel Eto’o and Gary Cahill. Real Madrid thrashed Schalke 9-2 on aggregate as they beat the German side 3-1 at home following their 6-1 away win. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace with Alvaro Morata scoring the third. Tim Hoogland scored for the visitors.

After winning their away leg 2-0 in London, holders Bayern Munich drew 1-1 at home against Arsenal to progress 3-1 on aggregate. Bastian Schweinsteiger’s opener was cancelled out by Lukas Podolski’s strike for the Gunners. Atletico Madrid humiliated AC Milan as they beat the Italian side 5-1 on aggregate. After beating the Italian strugglers 1-0 in Milan, the La Liga challengers beat their visitors 4-1 in the second leg. Diego Costa scored a brace with Arda Turan and Raul Garcia also scoring. Kaka’s goal was a mere consolation. 

Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marquinhos scored for Paris Saint-Germain as the French champions beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in Paris. They progress on an aggregate score of 6-1 thanks to their 4-0 away victory. Barcelona beat Manchester City 2-1 at Camp Nou to progress on an aggregate score of 4-1. Lionel Messi and Dani Alves scored for the Catalans while Vincent Kompany scored for the visitors. Barca beat City 2-0 at the Etihad in the first leg.
