The inaugural Global League Player Draft was completed in Cape Town on Sunday with all eight teams appearing to express satisfaction and some frustration in almost equal measure which suggests the 18-man squads are as evenly matched as the organisers hoped they would be.
As in every player draft there were dreams made and broken but for the host of rookie (under-23) players chosen even a modest payment in US dollars for the six-week tournament represented a dream windfall.
Salaries for the Protea and International marquee players are not disclosed but are believed to be in the region of $180 to $250 000 while the drafted players will enjoy contracts from $135 000 for the first pick and descending to $115k for the second pick, $100k for the third, $85k for the fourth, $75 for the fifth and down to $10 000 for players 17 and 18.
Each squad could choose a maximum of five overseas players (including Kolpaks) and a minimum of two rookies, one of whom must play in every game.
The fixtures will be announced on Monday, 28 August.
