The popular Mahaweli Reach Junior Tennis Championships commenced yesterday (17th) at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel courts. It will end on Sunday.
This is the fourth year running for this tournament, which has attracted over 100 entries. As rain is prevalent during evenings, the organizers hope to start as early as 8 am on all four days.
The age groups will be under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 and the events are for boys and girls. A maximum of twenty matches are scheduled for a day.
Zahira College, Matale’s Mohamed Naveed, who has carried all before him for the last two years, will be competing in the under-19 age group. Barring something sensational, Naveed should make it three in a row.
The organisation of the tournament is in the hands of that capable duo – Nithila Unambuwa and Nelunika Wijeratne.
