The first day of the Milo Sri Lanka Schools National Swimming Championships started off at the Sugathadasa Swimming College last morning with the active participation of over 900 swimmers competing in various age groups.
With the preliminary rounds being worked off during the day, it was the defending title holders getting the upper hand in the qualifiers gaining the maximum points at the end of the day.
Ranjula Agalawatte of Royal College got the first gold medal for his school as he finished first clocking 18.41.06 in the 1500m Freestyle and Eshan Sovis of St. Joseph’s secured the second spot followed of Timas Amarasinghe of Ananda College at third.
In the girls 1500m freestyle, it was Imanie Abayakoon of Mahamaya College taking first berth while Tishani Ranawana of Holy Family Convent bagged silver. Mithma De Silva of Girls High School secured the bronze in the event.
At the end of the first day’s events that were concluded at 9.30 p.m., the defending champions in the Boys division, St. Joseph’s College lead the overall points table with 142.5 points while Royal drew second collecting a total of 118.5 points. Ananda College take the third spot with 81 points followed by S. Thomas College and Lyceum College at 4th and 5th places respectively.
The reigning national champions Mahamaya College Kandy dominate the girls section with a landslide total of 145 points while the second team in line, Museaus College have an aggregate of 83 points. Ladies College and Visakha Vidyalaya take the third and fourth spots with 71 and 63 points respectively.
