Lyceum Wattala clinch final group game of ThePapare Basketball Championship

The final group B match of ThePapare Basketball Championship was held today at Good Shepherd Convent Kotahena with Lyceum International School Wattala playing against St. Lawrence Convent.

Lyceum took control of the game from the start securing possession of the ball from the jump ball and scoring first. A few changes in the offensive strategy in the first quarter paid off, giving them a good lead of 7 points.

First Quarter: Lyceum International School Wattala – 16 St. Lawrence Convent – 9

During the second quarter Lyceum made best use of the many interceptions they made and increased their lead to 17 points in the first few minutes of the quarter. The girls from St. Lawrence Convent missed a few crucial jumpers, leaving them with only 4 points for the quarter.

Second Quarter: Lyceum International School Wattala -35 St. Lawrence convent – 13

The beginning of the second half was when St. Lawrence finally got into the game, coming in and scoring 10 points consecutively. They were able to outscore the girls from Lyceum 14-10 during the quarter. The girls from St. Lawrence employed an effective zone defence during this half which really paid off well. The Lyceum girls were also not allowed to drive in and had to resort to jump shots because of this strategy.

Third Quarter: Lyceum International School Wattala –45 St.  Lawrence Convent – 27

During the 4th quarter St. Lawrence really made up for the last few quarters, taking complete control of the game and reducing the lead to just a few baskets by scoring a few consecutive 3 pointers. However the good performance in this quarter wasn’t enough for St. Lawrence to win the match as they fell behind by a mere 9 points.

Fourth Quarter: Lyceum International School Wattala – 54 St. Lawrence Convent – 45
