Cargills Gladiators topped pool ‘B’ with three wins out of three while KBSL Dragons remained unbeaten as well with two wins and a tie on day 1 of the Sri Lanka Super 7’s second leg at the Racecourse Grounds.
Day 1 of the second leg commenced with the school games. St. Peter’s, Wesley College, St. Joseph’s and Isipathana won the first four games while Zahira College and Prince of Wales College surprised St. Peter’s and Wesley College in the next round of matches. Zahira College drew the game against St. Peter’s while Wesley College were stunned by Prince of Wales, the latter recording a 24-5 win. There was no trouble for St. Joseph’s and Isipathana, however as they continued their winning ways, in the 1st session of school games.
Text Commentary – Day 1
St. Peter’s College beat Wesley College in a close game that separated the winners by one try to start off the 2nd session of play for the schools’ teams. Zahira College, impressive following their draw against St. Peter’s, beat Prince of Wales, 19-5.
Isipathana made amends for their semi-final loss in the first leg to St. Joseph’s, beating the first leg runners up convincingly 27-nil while St. Thomas’ College ran over DS Senanayake College 29-5 to end day one of the schools’ games.

The franchise games kicked off in the latter part of the day as Leg 1 winners Mobitel Eagles took on the last placed team of the first leg, Access Kings. Access Kings, without a win from the 1st leg shocked the first leg winners, winning 21-12. EZY Wolves, who remained unbeaten on day one of the first leg did not start well as they went down to the KBSL Dragons 31-14. Walkers Vipers defeated leg 1 runners up Softlogic Warriors while Cargills Gladiators beat Etisalat Panthers, winning 33-14.
Winners of the 1st leg Mobitel Eagles had a torrid time, losing game number two of the day to KBSL Dragons, 12-19. EZY Wolves and Softlogic Warriors bounced back from their first game losses beating Access Kings and Etisalat Panthers respectively. Cargills Gladiators added to their strong start beating Walkers Vipers 19-14.
Mobitel Eagles managed a win at the third time of asking as a try from Tharinda Ratwatte in the last move of the game sealed a dramatic win, 21-19. KBSL Dragons remained unbeaten in the day even though they drew in the final game of the day against Access kings 17-all. Cargills Gladiators made it three out of three, beating Softlogic Warriors 22-12. Etisalat Panthers overcame Walkers Vipers winning, 14-10 in the final game of the 1st day’s play.
