18th LC-BC Trophy

The island nation’s most anticipated hockey rivalry will take place at Police Park on Saturday (28th), with title holders Ladies’ College facing off against Bishop’s College for the 18th LC-BC Trophy. The Under-19 match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., with the Under-17 match at 2:00 p.m.

Where will the Trophy travel this year? Boyd Place or Flower Road? Let’s take a look at some stats and trivia of this great rivalry.

Last year’s encounter was a memorable one, with the matches closely fought until the final moments. In the Under-17 game, Ladies’ College secured a hard-fought 1-0 win, while the Under-19 game ended in a thrilling scoreless draw. By virtue of winning the U-17 game and drawing the main 1st XI U-19 encounter, the LC’ites took the overall title home to Flower Road.

A key factor this time around is that both teams have retained the services of last year’s captains, Thimanya Ellepola (LC) and Anika Tennekoon (BC). Meanwhile, Ladies’ College leads the tally with 9 wins against Bishop’s College’s 6 wins.

The LC-BC Shield was inaugurated in 2005, with Ladies’ College dominating the early years and Bishop’s College fighting back with gusto, delivering striking performances in recent years. The 2020 and 2021 encounters were missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 2021 encounter was played in 2022, with the Bishopians securing the victory.

The 2022 Under-19 encounter ended in a 0-0 draw, with Seneca Dissanayake leading the Ladies’ team and Bishop’s being led by Onaya Kulatunge.
