The “Pink Day” turned even more special when the Galle Marvels got the better of the Dambulla Sixers with a thrilling Super-Over win in the 16th match of the LPL 2024, played in Colombo.
The ‘Pink Day’ campaign titled ‘Strike with Hope,’ an initiative by Dambulla Sixers, featured players wearing pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Galle Marvels also showed their support by wearing a special jersey that combined pink with their usual neon green during the match.
After being decided to bowl first, the Marvels were restricted to 148/9 in their 20 overs, with some excellent bowling displays from the Dambulla spinners.
Hales (38 off 26) had given them the ideal start in the powerplay where they got 56 only losing Dickwella. Galle only managed to score only 41 runs, losing four wickets where spin duo of Nabi and Hemantha handled the middle phase extremely well and finished their spells with 2/14 and 2/19, respectively.
However, the cameos from Pretorious (16 off 12) and Arachchige (15 off 12) helped them to score 51 runs in the last five overs including 16-run final over from Pradeep who ended up with 2/42.
In reply, Dambulla lost Perera in the very-first over for a first-ball duck. Zadran played a good knock of 18-ball 30 inside the powerplay before dragging one onto the stumps off Theekshana.
Hendricks kept them in the hunt as he notched up his third LPL fifty despite losing another three wickets in the middle overs. Nabi and himself looked comfortable in the chase at the end of the penultimate over, with 8 needed off the final over.
Somehow, Theekshana managed to bring Galle into the game as the opener holed out to long-off in the third delivery after contributing 72 runs. Nabi was able to find the boundary in the fifth delivery to level the scores.
The fielders were brought in to save the single as Nabi picked one at cover-point and he was run out for 25, trying to sneak through for a single which made the way for the first Super Over of the season.
Theekshana ended his 4-over spell with 3/26 as the Marvels decided to go with him against Nabi and Hendricks in the Super Over. But, Dambulla Sixers only managed to score 6 runs, losing both wickets with one ball to go.
Then, Hales and Arachchige came against Thushara and the duo ensured Galle Marvels got over the line within just 4 balls as the Englishmen hit a first-ball four before finishing it off with a maximum against Thushara.
