Isuru Udana fighting half-century and two crucial wickets helped Galle Marvels top the points table with two wins in two games after beating Colombo Strikers in the 5th match of the Lanka Premier League 2024 in Pallekele.
Galle Marvels were flying high in the powerplay after Colombo Strikers put them into bat first. They raced to 50 within just 3.4 overs, especially Dickwella made the bowlers toil.
Skipper brought up his half-century, coming off only 17 balls before Alex Hales perished the very next delivery for 14 off Binura Fernando. The Marvels finished the 6-over phase with 72 runs, but Shadab Khan removed the dangerous Dickwella (50 off 18) just after the powerplay.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa walked back without troubling the scorers, getting runout very next delivery. Just like yesterday’s game, Shadab turned the match on his head with another double-strike. Pretorius followed Liyanage and Seifert to become his 4th victim, which reduced Galle to 94/6 after 11.
Straightaway, Isuru Udana took Glenn Phillips to the cleaners and along with Sahan Arachchige tried to revive the innings. They fought hard with a 79-run partnership for the 7th wicket in 51 balls which was helped by some sloppy fielding by Colombo.
After a handy contribution, Arachchige (35 off 27) fell to Matheesha Pathirana off the last ball in the penultimate over. After losing a flurry of wickets, Udana made such an impactful knock of 52 runs off 34 balls.
Udana was dismissed in the final over as the Strikers completed a team hat-trick, bowling out the Marvels for 179 at the end of their 20 overs. Shadab was superb again with another 4-wicket haul while Fernando was exceptional with the ball, picking up 3/22.
In reply, Colombo Strikers managed to score 57 runs in the powerplay, but lost 3 wickets too. Gurbaz scored 29 off 17 balls before castling him with a brilliant yorker by Zahoor Khan.
Even after the powerplay, the Strikers lost their key batters at regular intervals despite getting starts to their innings. Skipper Perera made only 18 while Phillips got out after making 26 as they were reduced to 117/7 in 14.3 overs.
Dunith Wellalage was not going down without a fight, but he did not get much support from the other end. However, the target was too much for young Wellalage when they needed 16 in the final over.
They ended up getting only 8 runs as Wellalage fell in the last ball. His 45-run knock came off 26 balls including 5 fours and 2 sixes. Theekshana, Arachchige and Udana each bagged a couple of wickets, guiding Galle Marvels to their 2nd successive win by 7 runs.
