Lakshitha Rasanjana guides Nalanda to first innings victory

Four matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.                                                                                              

Nalanda College, Colombo vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo

Group C fixture between Nalanda College and St. Peter’s College concluded today at the Nalanda College grounds. Even though, the match ended in a draw, the crucial first innings points were won by Nalanda. Nalanda College resumed day two on 203 runs for 7 wickets and added only 16 runs for the remaining 3 wickets.

In reply, the visitors struggled against the disciplined bowling of the hosts as they were bowled out for 154 runs. Off spinner, Lakshitha Rasanjana was brilliant with the ball for hosts as he picked up 5 wickets for 30 runs. Nalanda batters began their second innings 65 runs ahead and scored 87 runs for 2 wickets at stumps on day two.

Thomas College, Mount Lavinia vs St. Benedict’s College, Colombo

Traditional fixture between S. Thomas College and St. Benedict’s College concluded today at S. Thomas College grounds, Mount Lavinia with the hosts recording first innings victory in the drawn game. The lads from Kotahena resumed day two on 31 runs for 1 wicket and were bowled out for 150 runs. Shannon Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for the Thomians with figures of 4 wickets for 09 runs.

The Thomian batsmen began their second innings 80 runs ahead and scored 153 runs for 5 wickets at stumps on day two. Right-handed batsman Manthila Wijerathne top scored with 57 runs for the school by the sea.

Thurstan College, Colombo vs Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, Moratuwa

Thurstan College gained major honors in a Group ‘A’ fixture against Moratu Maha Vidyalaya which concluded today at Moratu Vidyalya grounds. The match ended in a draw but Thurstan managed to win first innings points. The visitors declared their first innings at 303 runs for 9 wickets with a lead of 137 runs over hosts’ first innings. Right-handed Sawan Prabash top scored with 95 runs while Left handed Nimesh Perera contributed with valuable 80 runs.

The Moratuwa boys showed a better batting display in their second innings as they posted 259 runs on the board. Shehada Nichendra was the top scorer with 92 runs while Nishan Madushka who represented the Sri Lanka Under 19 side in the recently concluded world cup, scored 67 runs. Sawan Prabash showed his all-round skills as he picked up 4 wickets for Thurstan College with his off spin.

St. John’s College, Panadura vs President’s College, Kotte

Group B fixture between President’s College and St. John’s College concluded today at St. John’s grounds in a draw but first innings points were won by President’s College. They declared their second innings at 300 runs for 7 wickets and set a target of 336 runs for St. John’s College.

Right handed batsmen Tashika Nirmal (92) and Hiruna Sigera (81) were the top scorers. In their run chase, lads from Panadura struggled with the bat and only managed to post 157 runs for 7 wickets when umpires called stumps on day two.
