Lakshan and Kavishka star on opening day

St. Joseph’s College and Trinity College took the upper hand on the opening day of the Singer Schools Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 matches which began today(21).

St. Joseph’s College vs St. Sylvester’s College

The Josephian skipper Jehan Daniel won the toss and opted to bat first on a flat track at Darley road in the group ‘D’ encounter. The visiting Sylvester’s were up to mark as they backed up their bowlers with outstanding fielding.

Skipper Daniel (54) and left-hander Sachintha Mahindasingha (58) stroked half tons to guide the hosts to a respectable 186 all out in 65.2 overs. Nadheera Balasuriya and Hushindu Nissanka were the top bowlers for the lads from Kandy with 2 wickets apiece.

The visitors started their innings in the worst possible way, losing 4 wickets for 13 runs. Right-arm seamer Lakshan Gamage was unplayable with the new ball as he claimed 4 quick wickets. However, Manjith Rajapaksha and Avindu Herath put up a crucial partnership as the lads from Kandy ended the day on 72/5.

The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

DS Senanayake College vs Trinity College

DS Senanayake College won the toss opted to bat first on a dry surface at the Asgiriya grounds. The hosts started off brilliantly, taking 7 DS wickets for 54 runs. Ayantha De Silva was the only batsman who looked good as he stroked 43 valuable runs as the visitors were bowled out for a below-par 120 in 34.4 overs in the group ‘A’ encounter.

Right-arm off spinner Kavishka Senadheera was the hero for the Trinity Lions as he troubled the DS batting with 6 for 32 in his 12.4 overs to restrict their counterparts on a rain hit day.

In reply, right-hander Hasintha Jayasuriya guided the home team with a solid 63. They ended the day in total control with a lead of 10 runs and 5 batters yet to come.

The match will continue tomorrow for day two.
