CWW Kannangara has been on song winning all their matches in the first round.  So far they have only lost to Wesley in the second round in a close match. We caught up with their star player full back Lahiru Lakshan who was outstanding throughout the season for the CWW.

When did you first get involved in the game?

I started playing rugby at U-14 level and my mother initially, was not too fond of the idea of me playing. She was concerned of injuries that I may have to go through been involved in the game. Fortunately my Father allowed me to try my luck and join training. My coach Asela did talk to my parents and helped me in starting my Rugby career.

How pleased are your parents now to see you succeed in the game?

They are very happy the way I’m currently playing and contributing to my school.

How pleased are you with the performance of your school this season?

It has been a very good year for us. As we were unbeaten in the first round, losing to Wesley in a close game in the second round was definitely motivating. Hopefully we can play in the top tier next season and perform better and create history for CWW Kannangara Vidyalaya.

Do you get enough support from your school?

We receive good support from the school authorities. Especially after our performance this season yet we still do not possess the proper infrastructure which will help us perform better. Hopefully next year we are able to receive ore support.

You scored many tries this season, in your opinion what makes you such a good ball carrier?

I work on my running, stepping and kicking skills often and always support the ball carriers. We have a very good understanding as a team every one understand their tasks. Our Coach has been a great strength in fine tuning our individual skills.

How do you usually prepare yourself before the match?

I come from home in a relaxed mindset focusing on what we did at training and the game plan we need to execute.

How do you balance studies and rugby?

I make time for studies and spend a few hours with the books on a daily basis.

What are your future plans?

I can play two more years for my school and after school I want to play for a club and be a part of the Carlton 7’s. My ultimate goal is to represent my country in the sport I love.

Who is your favorite rugby player and Why?

Wales full back Leigh halfpenny, he manages the game really well I have seen his running and kicking game which is inspiring for me.

Is there anyone who you would like to mention, who has helped you succeed?

I thank my parents for being with me and for the support they have extended. I thank my sisters for their support. Especially my coach, Asela who has been right behind me from my younger days and encouraging me to do well. Finally I like to thank all the teachers and all others who have helped me
