Ladies’ College strikes victory against Bishop’s College at the annual hockey encounter which took place at Astro Turf this evening.

The hype of the event was obvious; it was a school event. Ladies’ College, hosting the event this year, was eager to bring home the championship. Bishop’s College on the other hand was more relaxed, enjoying a Saturday afternoon. The supporters from both schools were in large numbers.

Following the blessings of the principals the two teams kick- started the Under 19 Ladies’ Bishop’s Hockey encounter. Captaining the Ladies college team was Jemiah Souraj with the help of Oshadhi Samaranayake as the vice-captain.  Sachithra Munasinha and Vijini Gunawardena respectively played parallel roles for the Bishop’s College. Vineshka Mendis and Yoshani Herathwere the goal keepers for the Ladies and Bishop’s teams.

The first half of the game was enjoyed by the spectators the most; many breathtaking moments within the game but no goals. Soon after the game started the ball was dragged on to the Ladies’ College goal by Taahir and Anishka playing at numbers 13 and 18. It was a near goal; narrow shave and there was no scoring success.  The game moved back and forth the in the first half. Another very close goal, for Bishop’s this time, came in the final 10 minutes to wrap up the half time. It was a penalty. Due to a bad pass which should have been stopped by the goal keeper, a penalty was awarded to Bishop’s College. Unfortunately the effort was not good enough; the score remained 0 -0.

Second quarter was a Ladies’ domination. Entering the 32nd minute of the game Anishaka Gunasekara at number 8 was again on hold with the ball. This time the lead was much promising. Entering the inner circle comfortably she slammed the ball in to the goal. Although two timely blocks came in by the goal keeper and a defender, the ball was all the way in. The score rising up to 1–0 was a very promising lead for the Ladies’ knowing there was only a few minutes left of the game. Bishop’s struggled but a reply attack was not forthcoming.  As a matter of fact they were not able to make a comeback at all. Being opportunistic Nishisha Vidhanapathirana, again from Ladies College, came into play scoring the second goal of the game. The score was up to 2 – 0 in favor of the LC.

All in all, Ladies’ College stamped an impressive victory on the 2013 Ladies’ Bishop’s hockey encounter.
