Five intense days of rowing came to an end at the Colombo Rowing Club today as the third annual National Schools Regatta came to an end on Saturday.
Events were worked off under five age divisions for both Boys’ and Girls’ categories with overall championships being awarded in four divisions. The Girls’ division was dominated by Ladies’ College Colombo who won three of those age divisions bagging a total of nine Gold Medals. Musaeus College Colombo won the Under 14 category, winning gold in both events held under it: the sculls and the double sculls. First time participants Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya managed to win Silver in the double sculls event while Bishop’s College Colombo also managed to win a Silver and a Bronze.
The Under 16 girls division finals were dominated by Ladies’, Bishops’ and Musaeus with Ladies College eventually winning out the group by securing Gold in the Pairs and the Fours events. Musaeus put on a strong show to have a one two finish in the sculls while Bishops College grabbed Gold in the Double sculls. Thu under 18 category was dominated by Ladies’, who went on to win three of the four events, claiming Gold for the Sculls, the Double Sculls and the Pairs. Musaeus College put on a dominant performance to win the Fours event convincingly, but were unable to prevent their traditional rivals from claiming the overall trophy. The all important Under 20 category was also comfortably won by Ladies’ as they won Gold in the Double Sculls, Pairs and Fours. Bishops’ College Colombo also impressed by winning Silver in the above mentioned events, and also securing Gold in the Single Sculls
Ananda College Colombo stormed through the under 14 Boys category, picking up two Golds and a Silver in the process of winning the overall title, but were given a surprising contest in the Under 16 age groups in the form of St. Joseph’s College. The Josephians put up an impressive display to bag Gold in the Sculls and Double Sculls. Ananda College were able to win the Pairs and the Fours, resulting in the overall title being shared by the two schools.
Royal College Colombo stomped through the under 18 Boys category, winning the Sculls, the Pairs and the Fours, along with three other medals. They also won three Silvers and a Gold in the Under 20 category, but were edged out by S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia, who won two Golds, a Silver and two Bronzes. One of the golds was in the fours category, where they beat Royal College at the end of a very exciting race, setting up an interesting narrative just weeks away from the Royal Thomian regatta where the main Fours event carries a lot of prestige and importance.
