Ladies College have had a great history in water polo since they took up the sport and reached their highest peak when LC’ite Manisha Rajanayaka led Sri Lanka’s first ever Women’s water polo team for the Asia Pacific Water Polo Championships way back in 2009.
The Enakshi Wickramanayake led Ladies water polo team, was the last successful team who layed their hands on the Edussooriya trophy and Shanelle Wikramanayake’s 2015 team plans on being the next. Shanelle Wikramanayake will be leading one of the most experienced sides this weekend that would start off with the Visakha encounter.
Wikramanayake will have her last year’s skipper Nideesha Ellawala by her side for assistance with Lara Modder who would continue her role in the team as prop. Both Nideesha and Modder were a part of the national water polo squad last year and will bring in their expertise as a key strength to the team.
Alongside the three, Ladies have four other senior personnel who would be the impact players during gameplay. Anoushka Tissera, Ashmeetha Cooray, Shenara David and Suhashana Wijayaratna are the senior players in the team having played at least two seasons. With the experience in the side, the Ladies will be looking to not only grab the coveted trophy but end up in the top spot of the Public Schools championships having ended second last year.
“We’ve been practicing throughout the year with our new coach this year Zahar (sir) and he has been a huge help for us. Our team is a very experience team and I believe we can do well this time”. Captain Shanelle Wikramanayaka added.
