After being arrested over a fatal car crash last morning, young Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis has been released on bail.
Mendis met with the unfortunate accident while returning from a function with a few friends, including upcoming star Avishka Fernando. Mendis’ SUV crashed into a cyclist in the early hours of July 5th in the Horethuduwa area in Panadura. The 64-year old cyclist was killed in the accident.
Police conclude investigations on World Cup fixing allegations
The preliminary investigations revealed that Mendis was not under any influence of alcohol during the time of the accident and has been cleared of any such charges amounting to ‘drunk driving’ after being produced to the Judicial Medical Officer.
The 25-year old batsman had reportedly remained sober as he had to drive back home and drop a few friends on the way. Just a few meters away from his house, Mendis is said to have fallen asleep on the wheel, causing the accident.
