Continuing its commitment to the development of youth through sports,  Kotmale Sri Lanka’s No 1 dairy brand has sealed a three year tie-up with St. Peter’s Rugby reiterating its commitment to the development of youth through sports.

This long- term partnership signifies a clear pledge from Kotmale to contribute towards the nurturing of youth through sports from grass root level.

Kotmale along with its parent Cargills (Ceylon) PLC has consistently invested in the development of youth and sports through tie-ups at professional level.

This would be the first time the Company extends its support to Rugby at School level.

Commenting on the sponsorship Sanjeewa Fernando, Deputy General Manager – Marketing of Kotmale noted that its commitment to the development of schools rugby is an extension of its long standing association with youth and nutrition.

“Kotmale is a brand that is synonymous with trusted nutrition and today it has innovated on its long standing history in the industry to develop a range of exciting products that have transformed the fresh milk experience of consumers.

Rugby has come a long way in terms of transforming amateurs to professional. The success of games such as cricket and rugby has been how attractive the game is to young people in terms of the glamour and the prestige attached. This is a journey that Kotmale has committed to partner in the long term, to help bring rugby to the forefront as it has done with fresh milk,” he said.

St. Peter’s College was the fifth school to commence playing Rugby and was among the four schools who played competitive rugby in Sri Lanka when they took up the game back in 1932.

This historic match was played against Royal College though lost, Peterites came back strong in 1934 to record their maiden win by 5-0.

St. Peter’s produced their maiden unbeaten champion side in 1936 under Archibald Perera and their last invincible side made a clean sweep when they won the triple Championship (which included a joint championship of President’s trophy) in 2010 under Keith Gurusinghe.

Since then, in 2013 the St. Peter’s College rugby team made its mark by winning the All-Island Under-18 and Under–20 Inter-School Rugby Sevens Championships and was placed third in the League Championships.

In the year 2014, the St. Peter’s Rugby team won the Under 18 Interschool Rugby 7s Championships and made it to the Semi Finals in the Under 20 category.

Currently the St. Peter’s Rugby team is placed in Division 1, Group A and are looking forward to an exciting season this year.

“Rugby is played passionately by the youth of our country and Kotmale as a leading supporter of Sri Lankan youth and sports is proud to be a part of nurturing sports and sportsmen and women from a very young age.

We see a great amount of potential and energy in the St. Peter’s College Rugby team. Therefore we are indeed very pleased to be their sponsor for the next three years and wish them all the very best for yet another successful season,” he added.
