St.Sebastian’s adds more misery on Isipathana
St.Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya proved to be a handful to an underpowered Isipathana College, as…
Hosts St. Sebastian’s came into their last game of the season today with a 3-1 victory over Isipathana College last week, but seemed rather discouraged as they had no hope of progressing to the semi-finals and only fielded 8 players at the first whistle. Kingswood however was looking for their first win in 3 games with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Maris Stella College, Negombo recently.
Dulaj Hirantha of St. Sebastian’s nearly created a fiasco when he sneaked into the 8 man team without proper IDs and a checkup. But he was quickly noticed by the Kingswood officials and was taken out before kick-off. Yasira Fernando joined the team well after kick off to increase the hosts’ numbers to 9.
Even without two men on field St. Sebastian’s managed to put up a good fight holding off the Kingswood swarm and pulling up lone attacks occasionally.
Prasad Vimukthi was the first to be cautioned for a clearance shot which struck the shin of Sankha Jayamina.
Kingswood fully aware of the advantage kept pushing up mercilessly and made attempts on goal but failed to score only because of the brilliant goalkeeping by hosts’ custodian Hashan Silva.
The visitors broke the deadlock just before half time when Dulin Wijenarayana volleyed the ball in after a scramble inside the box.
Half time – St. Sebastian’s College 0 – 1 Kingswood College
The second half began quite uneventfully as Kingswood who had the advantage in numbers, the lead and possession, seemed to let go a bit and failed to build up strong enough plays to find the back of the net. The build-up was constantly hampered with fragile ball control and numerous missed passes.
The hosts on the other hand were lucky enough to get a few chances towards goal but failed to make an impact due to lack of manpower.
Kingswood falter against Maris Stella; Royal draws against Holy Cross
Maris Stella College kept their unbeaten streak alive with a 3-0 win against Kingswood College while…
A foul on Kingswood striker Lahiru Kanishka in the 20 yard box earned them a penalty and N.Buddhika netted it to double the lead in the 50th minute.
Lahiru put up a wonderful dribbling display not long after, cut across the keeper who came forward and tapped the ball into the back of the net ending the game 3-0 in favour of the visitors.
Kingswood have two matches remaining for them but would not be able to reach the semis as the top 2 spots are already booked by Maris Stella College and St. Joseph’s College respectively.
