As Hon. Namal Rajapakshe assumes duties as the new Sports Minister of Sri Lanka, his predecessor, MP Harin Fernando, who ran the show for a while under the administration of former Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena, expressed his views on the matter earlier yesterday.

Whilst congratulating Rajapakshe on his new appointment, Fernando reminded him that the opposition is keeping watch. Fernando had the following to say on his Twitter account;

Furthermore, at a media briefing held yesterday, Fernando went on to emphasize on the importance of “keeping politics away from sports” and how “being a sportsman himself Hon. Namal Rajapakshe has no excuse whatsoever” in terms of developing sports in Sri Lanka.

The former Josephian Rugby Player, Fernando further added that “with an uncle as the country’s President and father as the Prime Minister, Namal won’t have any trouble building 9 sports Complexes in all 9 provinces” which was an initiative that was begun by the previous government.

However, with a former National Rugby Captain as the Sports Minister and an ardent sports enthusiast in the opposition, Sri Lanka Sports has a great opportunity to grow into a real power in the sporting arena in the coming years.
