Kandy Sports Club registered their fourth victory of the ongoing Dialog Rugby League vs Hambantota Sharks which kicked off at D. A. Rajapaksa Stadium in Beliatta yesterday.
South African flanker, Christopher Cloete was the main architect as he continued his menacing performance with a hat-trick of tries to take Kandy to 34 points (5-tries, 3-conversions, 1-penalty) to Sharks 21 (2-tries, 1-conversion, 3-penalties)
Cloete’s tries came in the 28th, 35th and 57th minute leaving the hosts still in search of their first win of the tournament.
It was Lavanga Perera who scored the first try which was his first of the season. Arshad Jamaldeen converted well to make it 7-0 in favour of the Kandy. Six minutes later champion try machine Anurudda Wilwara knocked-down a defenders to scorch his way to another try which went uncoverted taking Kandy tally to 12 v Sharks 00.
Rajitha Samaramnayake of Sharks reduced the stress when he scored a wonderful try that was unconverted in the 15th minute adding five points. Soon after, the Sharks were awarded a penalty by Kandy not releasing the ball and its was well kicked by Joseph Dunn adding another three points for the home team.
Shark’s Joseph Dunn was the main producer once again for the men in blue as the Sri Lankan based Fijian winger, added 10 points for his team with a try, a conversion and penalty kick. Rajitha Samaranayaka scored a try to give the hosts a bit of hope but it was too little too late. Amjad Baksh and Wagawulagi Emori also put over a penalty each.
Kandy took the opportunity to rest the veteran Fazil Marija, Pradeep Liyanage, Saliya Kumara and Gayan Weerarathne who are the former and current Tuskers and tested the depth in the squad with the likes of Arshad Jamaldeen, Gayan Jayawardena and Thinina Wijesinghe etc getting ago.
At the final whistle the scoreboard read 34-21, as the Kandyans had registered their fourth win in the fifth week of the season.
