Kamindu, Dhananjaya and Avindu Steers Richmond to innings victory

Two traditional matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

Richmond College, Galle vs Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala

Richmond College, who have already reserved their place in the U-19 Division 1 pre-quarter finals, recorded a comprehensive innings victory over Maliyadeva College, in a traditional fixture worked off today at Maliyadeva College grounds. After winning the toss, Maliyadeva skipper decided to bat first but the decision back fired as they were bundled out for just 110 runs. Avindu Theekshana was instrumental for the hosts’ batting collapse, as he took 7 scalps for 42 runs with his left arm spin.

However, the visitors replied strongly with the bat posting a mammoth score of 510 runs for 8 wickets. Left handed stroke maker Dhananjaya Lakshan who made his presence felt during the recently concluded Under 19 world cup with a few stunning knocks, stroked 154 runs while Sri Lanka U-19 skipper Kamindu Mendis made 124 runs for the visitors. The hosts had a challenging task in hand as they trailed by 400 runs in the second innings and they only managed to score 165 runs all out. Left arm spinners Dilum Sudeera and Avindu Theekshana picked up 8 wickets between them for Richmond College.

President’s College, Kotte vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

Traditional fixture between President’s College and St. Joseph Vaz College commenced today at Godigamuwa. After winning the toss, skipper of President’s College decided to bat first but they were shot out for just 113 runs. Kanishka Nanayakkara was brilliant with the ball for the Wennappuwa boys, picking up 6 key wickets for 42 runs.

In reply, St. Joseph Vaz College made a much better batting display as they finished day one on 274 runs for 7 wickets. Yohan Peiris remained unbeaten on 81 runs while Kanishka Nanayakkara, who bowled a brilliant spell with the ball, showed his batting credentials scoring 55 runs. Left arm spinner Hasindu Pramuka was the pick of the bowlers for the lads from Kotte with 4 wickets for 41 runs.
